Il dono dei Magi / O. Henry ; illustrazioni di Ofra Amit
Roma : Orecchio acerbo, c2013

History of the Visit / Daniel Reuter
2. ed.
Peperoni Books, 2013
Abstract: The minimalistic aesthetics of this book remind people of a sophisticated piece of electronic music. It´s not the rhythm or the melody that drives the piece forward, it's the sound that fills the room while layers of the same, but offset played patterns generate complexity. There are rugged cliffs, dark barren landscapes, ground vegetation and different shaped monoliths, buildings with no obvious function and few interiors not meant to reside in. While the silver gray of the images is getting louder you are traveling on the moon like an isolated earthling looking for the right direction.
Rain! / story by Linda Ashman ; pictures by Christian Robinson
Mifflin, 2013
Abstract: One rainy day in the city, an eager little boy exclaims, “Rain!” Across town a grumpy man grumbles, “Rain.” In this endearing picture book, a rainy-day cityscape comes to life in vibrant, cut-paper-style artwork. The boy in his green frog hat splashes in puddles—“Hoppy, hoppy, hoppy!”—while the old man curses the “dang puddles.” Can the boy’s natural exuberance (and perhaps a cookie) cheer up the grouchy gentleman and turn the day around?
A history of the world / Andrew Marr
Pan Books, 2013
Abstract: Fresh, exciting and vividly readable, this is popular history at its very best. Our understanding of world history is changing, as new discoveries are made on all the continents and old prejudices are being challenged. In this truly global journey, political journalist Andrew Marr revisits some of the traditional epic stories, from classical Greece and Rome to the rise of Napoleon, but surrounds them with less familiar material, from Peru to the Ukraine, China to the Caribbean. He looks at cultures that have failed and vanished, as well as the origins of today's superpowers, and finds surprising echoes and parallels across vast distances and epochs. A History of the World is a book about the great change-makers of history and their times, people such as Cleopatra, Genghis Khan, Galileo and Mao, but it is also a book about us. For 'the better we understand how rulers lose touch with reality, or why revolutions produce dictators more often than they produce happiness, or why some parts of the world are richer than others, the easier it is to understand our own times.'

Small God, big city : earth god shrines in urban Hong Kong / Michael Wolf
Hong Kong University press, 2013
Abstract: What happens when a small, rural god moves to a big city? In this series of colourful and thought-provoking images, Michael Wolf focuses attention on overlooked objects in the visually overwhelming environment of Hong Kong. Found commonly in doorways of shops and homes, Earth God shrines are physical manifestations of the vulnerability of traditional beliefs and practices. The context of the images, the ingenuity by which these small shrines position themselves in the urban surroundings, raises questions about the Earth Gods relevance in an increasingly modern and urbanised city. Includes an illuminating essay on the subject by Lee Ho Yin and Lynne D. DiStefano.

Flight Behaviour : a novel / Barbara Kingsolver
Faber and Faber, 2013
Abstract: "The flames now appeared to lift from individual treetops in showers of orange sparks, exploding the way a pine log does in a campfire when it is poked. The sparks spiralled upward in swirls like funnel clouds. Twisters of brightness against grey sky." On the Appalachian Mountains above her home, a young mother discovers a beautiful and terrible marvel of nature: the monarch butterflies have not migrated south for the winter this year. Is this a miraculous message from God, or a spectacular sign of climate change. Entomology expert, Ovid Byron, certainly believes it is the latter. He ropes in Dellarobia to help him decode the mystery of the monarch butterflies. Flight Behaviour has featured on the NY Times bestseller list and is Barbara Kingsolver's most accessible novel yet.
